Trainee Marine Engineering under UK process

This 4 pre-sea course imparts extensive coaching in shipboard exercise. It consists of instructors and deliver familiarization along with Marine Work shop coaching (as per IMO modules). Then the applicant will cruise as a Motor Cadet with stipend. 100% positioning will rest confident by the academia.

On a coaching program durable roughly 4 months. Working to obtain sea time. Gets organized coaching and experience on panel. They support and understudy the ship's professional authorities in their responsibilities. As an Engineer Cadet you may get wage roughly 400 - 600 US$ per month

Eligibility:
  • B Tech (ME / ELEC / ECE /EEE / AUTO)
  • Engineering Degree from an AICTE approved college
  • Min 50% Overall
  • Min 50% marks in English in either 10th or 12th Std
  • Age below 25 years as on date of start of course
  • Medically fit certified by a Govt. approved doctor
  • Eye sight 2.5
  • No colour blindness
  • Fluency in English

Age:

It should not exceed 27 yrs. on the date of commencement of training.

Medical fitness:

Medically fit with eyesight 6/6, with or without external aids. Maximum power permitted ± 2.5. No colour blindness. All candidates have to pass complete medical examination and mandatory tests prior to joining. GPSMS has a panel of qualified doctors and professional laboratories specialising in Merchant Navy regulations and requirements as per ILO Convention 147 Seafarer’s Medical Examination.

Admission Procedure:

  • Students will obtain a Letter of Comparability (LOC) from NARIC, UK which will state that their degree qualification obtained from India is equivalent to a British Bachelors degree. The time frame to obtain this certificate will be about 45 days. This process can be initiated only after the student has received his degree passing certificate from his University.
  • Obtaining a Letter of Initial Assessment (LIA) from the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA), UK. This process can be done only after receiving the LOC from NARIC. The time frame required to obtain the LIA from the MCA is approximately 45 days.
  • After receiving his LIA, the student will do the 4 basic STCW 95 courses i.e. Personal Survival Techniques (PST), Personal Safety and Social Responsibility (PSSR), Fire Prevention & Fire Fighting (FPFF) and Elementary First Aid (EFA). The time duration required for completing the above mentioned 4 courses will be about 2 - 3 weeks approximately.
  • After completion of the 4 STCW courses, Continuous Discharge Certificate (CDC) will be applied for the student. It may take anywhere between 1 - 2 months to receive the CDC. The CDC is like a seafarer's identity document and is a mandatory requirement for a person joining ship.
  • After receiving the CDC, there will be a gap of 1 - 2 months before the student joins ship. On the ship, he will be working in the capacity of a Trainee Marine Engineer and will receive a stipend in the range of 200 - 300 USD / month. Food and accommodation will be free of charge on the ship. The flight ticket from India to the country where the student is joining ship will be paid by the shipping / ship-management company.
  • The student will be issued with an MNTB Training Record Book from the UK college prior to his joining ship. The student will have to complete the tasks mentioned in the MNTB Training Record Book during his stay on board the ship which may vary from 6 - 12 months. The time required by the applicant to be completed on the ship will be mentioned his LIA and is likely to be in the range of 6 - 12 months.
  • On completion of his requisite sea service, the student will sign off from the ship. Now, he will prepare to go to UK for an approximate period of 6 months to give his exams. The approximate duration of stay in the UK will be about 5 - 6 months subject to the student clearing all his exams in the UK. On clearing his exams in the UK, the student will be awarded with a Engineering Officer of the Watch (EOOW) certificate of competency (CoC). This CoC will enable the seafarer to join ship as a 4th Engineer for which the starting salary is around USD 3,000
